What is the main argument of the video? How does the introduction of the video support this argument? What about the main support (what types of main support are there?)? What would make the middle part more convincing, if you feel it does not effectively support the main argument? How does the conclusion of the video work to wrap up the whole argument?

Note: If you wish to comment on the video, please perform the assignment first, and then comment.

(You might think that listening to parts of this video is torturous, but push through).

Due before class on Wed. Feb. 5th.

Reply to a classmate: Find a classmate you can politely disagree with, and comment on his/her blog.

Note: Disagree with what you think your classmate misdiagnosed or mislabeled as part of the argument, especially the evidence. If you wish to disagree with his/her opinion, do so, but please perform the assigned reply first.

Stay helpful and professional!

    1. I feel that you missed the main point of this video. The video does not only talk about sound, but how this person was being tortured. He said he was being kicked, shackle up, and barking dogs brought to his face. He also mentioned being put in a cold room and isolated for months.

    3. i feel that maybe you could've stated that first sentence in a nicer way. We all see things differently but i wouldn't say that to someone else. I have a different point of view, such as everyone else..that's why this is an argument assignment. Thanks for the criticism.

    4. Sorry, I did not mean any harm by it. I did not mean to hurt your feelings. I guess is the military in me to be frank. My comment to the video is not as well organized as yours was. I am a terrible writer.

  2. The main argument was how sound can be both pleasant and excruciatingly torturous. The introduction supports this by starting with whispers of poetry traversing into painfully loud tones which you must try and endure to understand what they are saying. Lastly concluding with music, that comes as a relief after all those offal sounds. The middle could have been more convincing if the man being tortured would have gone into more detail about how the sound affected him. What was the worst part of the loud sounds? If he said that he thought the loud music was as bad as the beatings, or the dogs coming in I would have related these affects better. But he seems to only say that they employed sound torture. The video argues its point well with: testimonial, audio and visual affects supporting the narrative. The video ends with a Non-Newtonian fluids dancing on a speaker. Non-Newtonian fluids turn into solids when pressure is applied. Perhaps sound too can become a solid when pressure is applied.

    1. You pretty much stole all the answer out of my thoughts hahaha. The main argument I definitely agree on. For the middle part though I believe he was just telling a story and experience. He did not necessarily needed to go to deep into how it affected him because you can obviously imagine it. That's just me though. But I do get were you are coming from. :)

    3. Thx Tiye for your reply. Looking back I agree with you that my (how the middle could have been more convincing) was a little off the mark. I'm still not sure what a better answer is, thingk I'm done thingking about it. Enjoy you weekend !

    4. Matt I thought you supported your views well and especially liked the hyperlink you added at the end - so did my kids - I feel we each have different views and you supported yours in an easy to read format. The overall gist of what you took was explained and the end gave me a completely different point of view i would not have seen otherwise.

  3. The main argument that came across to me was the effect of normal actions done in extreme and controlled conditions can be used to "break" the human spirit. The intro, by opening on one extreme with a person who had intimate knowledge of the effects being presented, then going to another extreme to show point. Although I feel the statistical data did support the research of the idea , the presentation was a bit overly annoying as I had the speakers turned up to hear the into. By visually showing and hearing an example of normal sound being distorted, the viewer/listener could make a connection to help identify the annoyance such a sound would create combined with controlled conditions and repetition.

  4. I did mine a little different. Question and answer.

What is the main argument of the video?
    Torture is inhumane.

How does the introduction of the video support this argument?
The introduction catches your attention. Torture can have a lasting effect.

What about the main support (what types of main support are there?)?
Main support is the examples this person gives.

What would make the middle part more convincing, if you feel it does not effectively support the main argument?
This person’s examples were convincing enough.

How does the conclusion of the video work to wrap up the whole argument?
The conclusion of the video visualizes how sound can physically torment your body.

    1. Jess, I started out doing mind the same way. I had to ask questions. Jess, I've been swimming in the water since class started, I would like to get on board now. I was looking for a little more description from your. Take a look at mine and tell me what you think.

    2. When watching the video I took it in another direction. I believe the video was speaking about sounds and distorted sounds. Sounds at different decibels can affect someone's hearing. The guy was only speaking of his experience. To me he was not the main arguement. I can see where you are coming from. I had to watch the video a couple times and then go back to certain areas to get my answer. At first glance I would have said the exact same thing.

    3. Jess,
I can see how sound can be torture, but I feel that the video talks more about how the sound range can be comfortable and uncomfortable to the human hearing.

  5. alright, Try 2...
The main argument in my opinion would be that sound can become unbearable and even used as torture. For example, the man's experiences at guatanamo bay where they would chain him up for two days, in a cold room and allow high decibels of distortion or music to torture him. Distortion in particular at high frequencies can be dangerous and painful to the human ear, causing permanent damage. The introduction supports this argument by starting with the victim reading a letter or poem and telling of his time being slow and then leads into the facts about the human ear and what it can withstand when it comes to sound. The main support would be listening to the mans account at the prison and what he had to withstand while in the room. I do wish he would've talked more about his torture through music and the effects of that instead of the effects of just the shackles. The conclusion wrapped up the whole argument by showing a visual and audio of what the music and distortion does in repetition and has the viewer think about those effects within the human body. The music and sound ranges throughout, helped me understand to it being annoying and bothersome, let alone the thought of being tortured to the very thing i enjoy on a daily basis.

  6. I listen to this video with my headphones on, bad idea LOL. plus the volume was up a little high.

The main argument that I got from the video was that sound can be amusing and painful as well. The introduction when the guy is talking poetry was an example of amusing and his feelings toward his story. Then the video goes straight into extremely annoying sounds. The Main support is the guy telling his story and explaining how he had to listen to music for two days straight at a very loud volume.Which I found horrible due to the fact I listen too loud music but I could not do that for days straight. For the conclusion, I didn't quite get but it was pretty cool.

    1. I listened to the video with my headphones as well. I can see how that type of music, on blast for a long period of time, can do damage to the ear.

    3. Tiye,
I think you got the gist of everything but I also believe you can take what you said and mold it into a bit more.
What would you say is also important about the introduction besides the guy reading lyrics? Would you agree that more supporting evidence would also be the researcher who talks about decibels and sound being unbearable? Do you think the background noises helped you understand how torturous those noises for prolonged times could be? For the conclusion, I think you could tie up everything you said and include the fact that you were also bothered by the music. For example: In conclusion, after watching this video from start to finish, I two could understand visually and audibly how music can be used to break someone. Just pushing through the video was enough for me to believe other than the expert and the mans story." Other than having a hard time with the conclusion, I believe you did a good job :D

    4. Tiye, seems like you understood most of the points in the video. However, did you consider listening to the lyrics of the song?

    5. Lia, Thanks I get where you coming from I could have added more detail. Im still trying to get use to blogging and speaking my mind fully on these things.

Jess, No I did not consider listening to the lyrics of the song. Is it the song in the middle or...?

    6. No problem, and by more detail make sure you don't get too into it, just point out the examples within whatever it is you are writing about. :D You did great and I understand. My mind works very differently than the way I write or speak on certain things also. You'll get it! :D

  7. The main argument is that sound can be vary painful especially with interrogation. He explains how being in a small room with loud heavy metal can do damage to the ear, especially fora long period of time. The introduction of the video supports this argument because it starts off with how low a person can hear tone and then what can happen when sound is distorted.

    2. and also showing in audio and visual right before the video ends , what loud music can do. The liquid became in weird shapes can you image what can it do to an human ear? pretty scary

  8. Main Argument:
I thought the main argument was how they can turn such a beautiful music/sound into such a torturous unbearable sound.

How does the introduction of the video support this argument?
Because they start out with poetry then play extremely loud painful sounds. He expresses how loudness can affect someone's body.

    Main Support?
I would have to say the mans experience was a great main support.

What makes the middle part more convincing?
I would say the mans experience is convincing enough. He was chained and cuffed stuck to a chair in a 2 1/2 meters by 2 1/2 meters and they played extremely loud heavy medal music for 2 and a half days.

How does the conclusion of the video work to wrap the whole argument?
By showing visual and sound of how extremely loud noise can affect someone's body.

    3. Breanna I realy liked you main argument I think it was a view with a lot of validity. I think if you had to make the middle more convincing you could support you theses if you added a child learning to play a violin. that would be turning a beautiful sound into torcher. LOL I played the cello 3-5 grade in school I know. Now the cello sounds good no matter how you play it.

  9. The main argument was that noise at different decibels can affect a person’s hearing. The introduction of the video supports this with the man speaking in low tone and then following up with loud noises at different levels. The main support is the man speaking about his experience at Guantanamo Bay and the fact that he was put in a room with loud music playing for two days. The middle part is convincing because they start playing a nice, low, quite song and towards the end of that song loud, annoying sounds start to play. The conclusion is that even though loud music can affect someone’s hearing, distortion in music can cause pain.

    1. Although I can see where you are coming from, I viewed the video in a different aspect. I believe the video was showing how sound can be a pleasant sound but can also be used to torture the humans mind and body. I feel they showed evidence by going from soft poetry to loud obnoxious sounds. Also the guys experience with the torture of the sounds and how it affected him after he was released. Although we have different opinions on the video I think you did a good job coming from a different point of view. Not all of us are going to view something the same. Well done Leah.

  10. Main Argument of Video:
How sound can be painful and with the right amount of loudness and time can create damage.

How does intro of video support argument?
The scene with the speaker and the sand supports the argument. The sounds gradually progress and the sand on the speaker flows up and down on the speaker more intense and violent.

    Main Support? Types?
The detainees experience at GITMO (listening to metal for 2 days). The back ground music and sounds throughout the video.

What would make the middle part more convincing?
I think if they would have continued the metal music and maybe added more distortion it would have reminded us how bad and painful the sound could be. However his experience alone is enough, just thought adding more sound could have made things more intense.

How does the conclusion of the video work to wrap up the whole argument?
The conclusion definitely supports the argument. The sound of the clay like substance rattling off the speaker was torture.

  11. • Music can be used in positive way as it can be used for negative ways.
    • The Intro explains how loud music can affect the ear and show examples of what a person can handle.
    • Is about this guy describing on how he had been tortured.
    • It was sufficient, since it was not a documentary.
    • Very interesting to see the liquid change the shapes as the loud music goes, it shows how loud music can seriously damage the human body.

    1. I understand where your coming from, I too agree with you about music being used for both positive and negative ways. The first time I watched the video, I too felt this way. However, I don't understand your 4th bullet? Would it not be sufficient if it was a documentary? A documentary consists of official pieces of written, printed or other matter. (GOOGLE) :) I agree with your statements minus the 4th bullet. Elaborate so I can have a better understanding of how you interpreted the video.

  12. I read the homework we had to do This Booth Excerpt. I'm trying to use Claim, Reason and Support to answer these questions

The main argument to me is, they were being tortured and used for an experiment with unbearable sounding music. The introduction describes where they were and his state of mind. He is supporting his introduction by stating what they are doing to them day by day or hour after hour. His main supporting evidence is when they use very loud music for days to torture them. Another supporting evidence is that the narrator is telling us about the ears and replicating what the ears hear when using cheap speakers. The middle part is when they use speaker to resemble what our ear can hear, and how sound effects a person. The conclusion is supporting the main idea. It showed what can happen to the ears and body from listening to extremely loud music.

  13. Andrew, I am also swimming in water. We can argue anything as long as we can show evidence to justify it.

  14. The main argument is how different levels of sound can affect a person. The video starts off with a man talking softly and in a calming manner to loud ear piercing annoying sounds. One main support is the video played different levels of sound some a bit higher than others. Having more details about how the man felt and how the sound affected him. The conclusion showed just how sound can have an affect on a person and their tolerance level.

  15. The main idea of this video is that sound can be used for good and bad purposes. I think that having the gentlemen in the video talking about how sound effected him made the argument more convincing. Another part of the video that made everything seem a little more intense was that the video had reenactments of the chamber that he was locked in and it showed basically how dark the room was and made me feel bad for the guy. The sounds that were played in the video and the pictures that were shown were definitely the main supports of the argument. I think that the whole video kind of wrapped together and this video did a great job of showing that at certain points, sound can be damaging and torturous.
