- One sentence that integrates a quote into the grammar of a sentence.
- One sentence that attaches a quote to a preceding sentence with a colon.
- One sentence that attaches a quote to a preceding sentence with an author tag (an author tag is where you give an author credit for his/her words--see LBH p. 644, Signal Phrases).

Alright, I am hoping I did this correctly seeing as I am the first person to post. If not, I apologize for being a bad example in this assignment! haha!

1.Malcolm X formed political views from this passion for learning such as how he perceived the collective white man as a “piratical opportunist who used Faustian machinations to make his own Christianity his initial wedge in criminal conquest.”
2.When Asked “How Malcolm benefitted from his incarceration.” Malcolm Replied: “Prison enabled me to study far more intensively than I would have if my life had gone differently and I had attended some college.”
3.According to Alex Haley (writer of The Autobiography of Malcolm X) Malcolm Little considered his last name a “slave name” and chose the “X” to signify his lost African tribal name. (Malcolm X Learning to Read,pg.1001:introduction:1)

ReplyDelete1. While in prison Malcolm X taught himself through determination to read and write by copying the dictionary word for word and states " I was so fascinated that I went on-copied the dictionary's next page".
2.When asked "How is the black man going to get "civil rights" before first he wins his human rights" Malcolm replies "If the American black man will start thinking about his human rights, and then start thinking of himself as part of one of the world's great peoples, he will see he has a case for the United Nations".
3.According to Elijah Muhammad history had been "whitened" with only reference of the "white man" being portrayed.(Malcolm X,pg1003)

ReplyDelete1. Not only did Malcolm X learn words but he believed," The dictionary was like a miniature encyclopedia" because of the people, places, and events in history he learned about.
2. When asked, "How much of an impact did slavery readings have on him?" Malcolm X stated: "It made such and impact upon me that it later became one of my favorite subjects".
3. According to Arnold Toynbee the word "Bleached" was specified to the white man. (Malcolm X, learning to read pg.1004)

ReplyDeleteAfter struggling many hours with present tense and present perfect, these sentences are what I came up with.
ReplyDelete1. Malcolm X’s findings have been that white man is a “piratical opportunist” in this world (1005).
2. Malcolm X made the best out of his prison term. He specifically says: “I don’t think anybody ever got more out of going to prison than I did” (1008).
3. Mr. Muhammad’s teaching and the many books in black history Malcolm X read leads him to his own conclusion. Malcolm X foresees “battling the white man” every minute of his life (1008)

2. In accordance with Malcom X, What he said about the British Man? He stated: “The white man had acted like Devil in every contact he had with the World’s Collective Non-white Man.”
3. Malcom X stated: I read Herodotus “The Father of History” and many other histories that opened my eyes. ( Malcom X, learning to read, Pg. 1005:28)

ReplyDelete1. In describing the state of onlookers watching heated debates amongst prisoners with subjects like, "Should Babies Be Fed Milk?"
2. Malcolm X ,knowing a different path may not have resulted in the same conclusion, stated: " I imagine that one of the biggest.....and boola-boola and all of that."
3. "...months passed without my even thinking about being imprisoned." Malcolm X stated as his newfound understanding of knowledge took hold. (Malcolm X, 5, 1002)

2. The reaction that he had to the UN, and their new world order being shaped along colored lines. Malcolm X said that it is nothing but "a skin game."
3. During the last year or so in the 'New York Times,' Arnold Toynbee used the word "Bleached" in describing a white man. His words were, " A Bleached human from Europe."

2. An English writer asked Malcolm X, "What's your alma matter?" Malcolm X stated: "Books".
3. Nat Turner wasn't going around preaching pie-in-the-sky and "Non-violent" freedom for all black men.(Malcolm X, p.1005)

2.)One of Xs' best ares of study was slavery, this is illustrated in this next quote: "I never will forget how shocked I was when I began reading about slavery's total horrors. It made such an impact upon me that it later became one of my favorite subjects when I became a minister of Mr. Muhammad's."
3.) Malcolm X shows in numbers the unbelievable evidence of some of the horrors endured by slaves with this fact. " Over 115 million African blacks-close to the 1930s population of the United States-were murdered or enslaved during the slave trade." (Malcolm X 1006)
1. While in prison, Malcolm X stated , "... I should try to improve my penmanship. It was sad. I couldn't even write in a straight line. " With this realization he requested a dictionary to improve his writing.

1. The vicious, arrogant white man put up the famous sign, “Chinese and dogs not allowed” as the Chinese were driven from Peking’s choicest areas.
2. What Malcolm X did not want to sound like to Mr. Muhammad was;” Look, daddy, let me pull your coat about a cat”.
3. If I weren’t out here every day battling the white man, “I could spend the rest my life reading, just satisfying my curiosity because you can hardly mention anything I’m not curious about. (Learning to read Malcolm X Pg. 1008)
